231. Revolt: Rise up in rebellion against an authority
232. Stephen Douglas: Senator who ran against Lincoln, debated him on slavery, and thought the US could remain half free and half slave
233. Citizen: A legally recognized subject of a state or country through birth or naturalization
234. Dred Scott Decision:  The Supreme Court said that state laws only affect those residing in the that state, slaves were property and not citizens and can’t sue, and slavery is protected by the 5th amendment. 
235. 5th Amendment: Law that says property cannot be taken away without due process of law
236. Unconstitutional: Not following the Constitution, illegal
237. Institution: An established law, practice, or custom
238. John Brown’s Raid: Plan to seize the weapons at a federal arsenal and arm slaves in a rebellion that would end slavery.  It ends with Brown hanged for treason and the rest of his men dead after their capture during the raid.
239. Secession: The action of formally withdrawing membership from the Union in 1860
240. Civil War: A war between citizens of the same country.

221. Popular Sovereignty: The power rests with people, often reflected in their ability to vote
222. Free Soilers:  People who moved to Kansas in hopes of making sure that Kansas entered the Union as a free state without slavery.
223. Bleeding Kansas: Violence in Kansas that resulted in over 200 people dead from pro-slavery and anti-slavery attacks on each other to try and gain control of Kansas in the popular vote.
224. Charles Sumner: Senator who gave a speech decrying the events in Bleeding Kansas and the actions of Douglas and the Southern Senators in trying to make it a slave state.
225. Preston Brooks: Nephew of Senator Andrew Butler who Charles Sumner talked badly of and blamed for Bleeding Kansas, who beats Sumner unconscious for the slander and is deemed a hero by much of the South
226. Chief Justice Roger: Taney Supreme court justice who had long opposed slavery, but as leader of the Supreme Court said that slaves were not citizens and would never be, and therefore could not sue.
227. Dred Scott: A slave who sued, saying that since his owner took him to a free state, that he should be made free.
228. Uncle Tom’s Cabin: Novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe about the horrors of slavery, it is often cited as a key reason so many in the North supported the anti-slavery cause and war.
229. Perspective: A particular attitude or way of looking at something, a point of view
230. Portray: Describe someone/something in a particular way, represent, depict

211. Society:  A structured system of human organization for large scale community living that furnishes protection, continuity, and identity for its members.

214. deforestation: The clearing away of forests
